Postdoctoral Position in Nanotechnology – Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Uppsala University, Sweden

Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Uppsala University have temporary full-time position for two years starting as soon as possible or by agreement.

Project Details

The objective of this multidisciplinary research effort is to create materials based on nanocellulose that can be used to heal chronic wounds. The functionalization of nanocellulose with bioactive peptides is one of the research activities. The functionalized materials are then assessed for their physicochemical and biological properties. The project will be conducted in close collaboration with researchers from the Karolinska Institute’s Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (Prof. Annelie Brauner research group) and Uppsala University’s Department of Pharmaceutical Biosciences (Prof. Ulf Göransson research group).

In order to successfully transfer bioactive peptides to the chronic wound environment, the effort will mainly concentrate on functionalizing nanocellulose. This suggests that in order to study the regulated release of the peptides, crosslinkers will need to be added to nanocellulose, along with peptide functionalization and chemical modification. To ensure a stable and bioactive functionalized material, a variety of coupling chemistries and techniques will be examined. In addition, the effort involves characterizing the material in terms of its stability in artificial biological contexts, fiber morphology, degree of substitution, and chemical structure.
