Application Scientist Pharma and Biopharma – Thermo Fisher Scientific

The Application Scientist Pharma and Biopharma position is a customer-facing scientific role within Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry Division (CMD), based out of Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. An Application Scientist Pharma and Biopharma in this function acts as the scientific bridge between Thermo Fisher’s analytical instrument portfolio — primarily HPLC, UHPLC, and LC-MS/MS systems, and pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical customers across India. The role sits within the Customer & Technical Support organization and combines hands-on laboratory expertise with pre-sales and post-sales technical consulting, method development, and customer training.

Key Responsibilities

1. As an Application Scientist, Pharma and Biopharma, the day-to-day scope generally includes:
2. Providing pre-sales and post-sales technical and application support to pharma and biopharma customers evaluating or operating HPLC, UHPLC, and LC-MS/MS platforms.
3. Delivering product demonstrations, customer presentations, technical seminars, and hands-on workshops highlighting chromatography and mass spectrometry workflows for Pharma and Biopharma applications.
4. Developing and optimizing analytical methods based on customer-specific workflows to ensure world-class instrument performance.
5. Troubleshooting product-related issues at demo labs or customer sites and supporting customer escalations with high-level scientific problem-solving.
6. Generating technically reviewed application notes and contributing data and reports to Thermo Fisher’s global technical knowledge tools.
7. Collaborating closely with Sales, Marketing, Service, Product Management, and other Application teams to support customer success and regional strategic initiatives.
8. Analyzing experimental data and providing scientifically sound recommendations to customers operating in regulated environments.
9. Staying current on emerging chromatographic and mass spectrometry techniques, scientific literature, and industry trends relevant to Pharma and Biopharma analytical applications.

Required Qualifications

1. Postgraduate degree or Ph.D. in Chemistry (Analytical/Organic), Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biotechnology, Pharmacy, or a related scientific discipline.
2. Minimum 5–7 years of hands-on experience with HPLC/UHPLC operations; additional experience with LC-MS/MS instrumentation and workflows is generally required or strongly preferred.
3. Demonstrated direct experience supporting Pharma and/or Biopharma analytical applications, including method development, troubleshooting, and data interpretation.
4. Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to both scientific and non-technical stakeholders.
5. Willingness to travel extensively (frequently cited at 60%+) within India to support customers, demo labs, and training centers.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Prior experience as a Field Application Scientist, Application Specialist, or Technical Support Scientist within a scientific instrumentation or life sciences company.
2. Familiarity with regulated laboratory environments (GxP) and analytical method validation in a pharmaceutical or biopharmaceutical setting.
3. Experience developing customer-facing training content, application notes, or scientific webinars.
4. Existing relationships or working knowledge of the pharma/biopharma customer landscape in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region or wider Maharashtra market.
